We all would have seen the bricks lying around on the pathways. We all would have just ignored it. I mean, no one cares until we have purchased it, or we are planning for a house. So, I thought of writing some information about the Bricks. What can be more important than a strong core? Nothing right. So for any building to be strong, choosing quality Bricks is very important. If you are interested to know more about the quality of the type of bricks used in construction, hold on to the post till the end.
Bricks are rectangular units made of clay. Bricks are used as a substitute for stone & it is an important construction material. They are popular from the olden days to the modern days because of their low cost and durability. Below is the list of different types of bricks used in the construction.
Sun Dried Bricks are made from clay and they are made by drying in the sun. These are very basic bricks & are only used in temporary construction. The sun dried bricks are not as strong as burnt bricks. Sun-dried bricks have very low resistance capacity due to more absorption of water. Hence the structure may collapse. Therefore the sun-dried bricks are not advisable for construction. Sun Dried bricks are slightly yellow compared to burnt bricks.
Burnt Clay Bricks
These are very popular bricks, widely used in construction work. Burnt clay bricks have more resistance. Burnt bricks have a uniform shape & proper dimension. Burnt bricks are manufactured by heating them in the kiln. Burnt bricks are classified as
First-class bricks( Best quality bricks) have an absorption capacity of less than 10% & crushing strength is 280 kg/cm2. It does not have efflorescence & is made from fine clay free from pebbles & gravel. These bricks are strong enough. It is used in a building for long durability& for building exposed to a corrosive environment etc.
Second Class Bricks(Moderate Quality Bricks) these bricks do not have a standard size. It is well burnt. It has a regular shape just like the first quality bricks. The absorption capacity is more than 10% but less than 15% & the crushing strength is 175 kg/cm2. The intended durability is more than 15 years.
Third class bricks ( Poor Quality Bricks) the shape and size of the third quality bricks are not regular. These bricks are slightly under burnt & have extensive efflorescence. The absorption capacity is more than 15% but less than 20% & the crushing strength is 140 kg/cm2. These types of bricks are not recommended for quality construction work.
Fly Ash Bricks
It is manufactured when fly ash and clay are molded in 1000 ᵒC. It contains a high volume of calcium oxide in fly ash. These types of bricks are used in masonry. Usually, clay bricks need plastering. But the fly ash bricks do not need any Plastering. These bricks have a smooth surface and are less porous than normal clay bricks. These are also called self-cementing bricks. Fly ash bricks are used in the construction of pillars & foundations. These bricks have high strength, uniform shape, and high damage resistance. These are one of the best types of bricks used in India.
As the name says, these bricks are made of concrete. They are high-quality bricks having high compressive strength. These bricks are damp proof. They are usually used in the construction of apartments, for sound reduction. Concrete Bricks are also called mortar bricks. Concrete bricks can be manufactured instantly on the site. These types of bricks are also commonly used nowadays in construction.
The name says it all. These bricks are hollow and are around one-third of the weight of normal bricks. They are also called cellular or cavity bricks. Their thickness is from 20-25mm. They are used in partitioning. Construction work by using these bricks is made much quicker than the other types of bricks.
Jhama Bricks are the over burnt Bricks. They are baked at high temperatures for a longer period. As a result, the shape is distorted. The absorption capacity is high. The jhama bricks are also known as the vitrified bricks. The strength of jhama bricks is equivalent to that of first-class bricks. These are used for foundation concrete. It is also used as a coarse aggregate in the concrete slab.
Engineering bricks are very strong dense and have high resistance. They have high compressive strength and low absorption capacity. They have a good bearing capacity& are used for mainly civil engineering works like sewers, manholes, groundworks, retaining walls, damp proof courses, etc.
Facing bricks come in standard size. The façade material is called the facing bricks. The versatility of the brick comes from its eye-catchy color. Facing bricks are resistant to various weather conditions since they are generally used on the exterior wall of buildings. These bricks have better durability than any other type of brick. But these bricks can only be used for the exterior of the walls.
There are various types of bricks, but the above-mentioned bricks are popularly used for various construction purposes. The price of the bricks varies according to the quality of the bricks. If you are someone planning to construct a house, then make sure to use the top quality bricks for the purpose. The structure of the building bears all the stress.
